Why margarita glasses shaped
Christopher Ross goes on the hunt for the culprit—and finds that we may only have ourselves to blame.
Which begs the question: Is the Martini glass—admittedly still a prominent fixture in many parts of the country—primed to fall by the wayside? Or will it come back around? Collins glasses are usually a couple ounces larger than a highball, but only due to the additional height. These tall, chimney-shaped glasses are good for gin-and-tonics, vodka-sodas, and whiskey and gingers but can be repurposed for tiki drinks made with crushed ice.
The brand also offers hundreds of other glass types — from coupe to wine glasses — so you can shop for more than just highball-style pieces. If you like the style of the Kimura Glass options — but not the price — this Nude Glass set recommended by Negri-Albert is quite similar.
Negri-Albert likes this simple and elegant highball glass. Like most CB2 options, these glasses are affordable and easy to replace while still being nice-looking. While they have a heavy base, the walls are still thin, so they feel a bit higher quality.
It seemed like everyone was buying and companies were knocking off this style. They look sophisticated, but with a bit of intrigue from the textured sides and different-size bases. Nick and Nora glasses are starting to become as common in craft-cocktail bars as coupes. Nick and Noras are also generally a little bit more specialized and therefore harder to source.
We also like this set of four glasses from Food Martini fans, this will ring a bell. You order your cocktail of choice up, naturally. The bartender chills an angular, fishbowl-sized cocktail glass, then pours, stirs and strains your drink into it—right up to the rim. No matter how carefully you pick this monstrosity up and bring it to your lips, it wobbles.
You over-correct. Booze ends up all over your shirt, your shoes and the attractive stranger next to you. A great margarita has a citrus bite to it. This bite is the orange-flavored liqueur, Triple Sec. It is made from the dried peels from the botanical family of oranges. Curacao, the liqueur, was then made from the peels so as not to waste the bitter fruit. Many people insist that salt around the rim of the margarita glass is essential to the drink.
Margarita salt is a coarse grained salt which is ideal for crusting the rim of a margarita glass. The salty flavor complements the flavors of the margarita, and the light crunch provides an added treat. The best way to rim a margarita glass is to run a lime around the edge of a glass and then dab the glass in a plate of salt. The margarita is then poured into the glass, and the cocktail is ready to drink.
A person does not have to salt their rim of the glass to enjoy the drink, but some purists say that the flavor suffers. Just like no one is sure of the true origin of the cocktail, there are many different thoughts about the glass that it is served in. There are many glass experts that agree that the shape of the glass comes from the much older and smaller French champagne glass, or coupe.
