While the other kids were running around outside, she was indoors writing monologues. Acting is really what helped me come out of my skin. At eight, she was performing in professional plays in New York.

She had played a small role on the crime show Fastlane, and one of its producers, McG, who was also working on creating The OC, fought to get her the role of Marissa. She came under intense scrutiny, and some of it was vicious, particularly about her weight this was the size-zero era.

At the beginning of , Barton was briefly taken to hospital again after behaving erratically in her back garden — cruelly, pictures taken by a neighbour appeared on a celebrity news website.
